Dr. Robert Stallman wrote an essay entitled "Divine
Hospitality and Wisdom’s Banquet in Proverbs 9:1-6" which
begins by surveying the meaning and operation of metaphorical language
in Scripture, presenting the case for what may be called a "metaphorical
perspective" for understanding God. Then it samples some of
the ways in which the Bible portrays God in the role of a host,
a very under-recognized image. Specific focus falls on understanding
Proverbs 9:1-6 and the banquet of Wisdom, together with some concluding
remarks. This essay can be found in The way of Wisdom, edited
by J. I. Packer and Sven K. Soderlund. Grand Rapids: Zondervan,
2000.
