Evangel University Music Department to present 30th annual Christmas concert Friday, Dec. 6

EU Jazz BandThe Evangel University Music Department will present the 30th annual Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:45 p.m. in the Robert H. Spence Chapel.

Admission is either a cash donation or non-perishable food item for The Salvation Army. The public is invited to attend.

The event will be hosted by 1976 Evangel graduate Steve Grant, Emmy award-winning news anchor at KY3-TV (NBC).

The magnitude and importance of this milestone 30th anniversary concert will be marked by performances from four of Evangel’s musical groups, including the following:

  • EU Orchestra, directed by Larry Dissmore
  • EU Jazz Orchestra, directed by Joel Griffin
  • EU Chorale, directed by Tom Matrone
  • EU Chorus, directed by Tom Matrone

“This concert will be a great Christmas event,” said Dr. Michael Kolstad, music department chair. “It will include the largest combined choir (chorale and chorus) we have had in the past 30 years! In addition, the Evangel University Orchestra and Jazz Orchestra will be showcased.”

A special performance also will be given by organ professor Daniel Hancock.

Two special guests

A pre-concert performance will be given by a guest ensemble of Suzuki Strings, directed by Starla Blair, beginning at 7:15 p.m.

The group consists of students, ages four through 18 years, who are a part of Evangel’s Community School of Arts. Students have the opportunity to perform in various group and solo venues such as recitals, Springfield Symphony Orchestra pre–concert music and Branson theaters.

The Children’s Choir of Southwest Missouri, directed by Debi Lee, also will perform. The choir is comprised of nearly 100 Southwest Missouri students, ranging in age from five through 18 years. They offer a performance-based music education program for the children of Southwest Missouri.

“We are excited to have the Children’s Choir of Southwest Missouri join us for this historic evening,” Kolstad said. “It will be an exciting celebration that also will allow the community to provide assistance for The Salvation Army this Christmas season.”

The Salvation Army’s nationwide campaign enables them to provide food, toys and clothing to more than six million people during the Christmas season.
