The Evangel University Orchestra, with special guest Steve Grant, will pay special tribute to Abraham Lincoln at its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the Robert H. Spence Chapel.
The centerpiece of the program will be a performance of Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait,” featuring Grant as narrator. Grant is a news anchor on KY3 and a 1971 graduate of Evangel.
Also making a guest appearance on the concert program is Dr. Larry Toll, associate professor of history. Toll will make a dramatic appearance as Captain Henry Reed Rathbone, a military officer who was present with Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre on the night that Lincoln was assassinated.
Dr. Larry Dissmore, professor of music, is the concert orchestra director.
“It is fitting for the orchestra to present a concert celebrating Lincoln during the nation’s 150th anniversary of the Civil War period,” Dissmore said. “Although Beethoven is a European, the Coriolan Overture captures the gravity of the time. The Dvorak symphony, composed in America, sets forth a musical vision for the country as a united people.”
