Evangel University humanities professor receives doctorate in English literature

Dr. Luke GibbsDr. Luke Gibbs, associate professor of English at Evangel University, recently earned a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

His thesis, titled Great Britain and Latin America: The Romantics and the Informal Empire, focuses on the British Romantic writers.

Gibbs examines the cross-influences of Great Britain and Latin America in the Romantic era.

In his thesis, Gibbs begins by stating that the philosophies and self-assured supremacy of imperial Britain were slowly being transformed by the influence of Latin America. Gibbs concludes that this influence has been reflected in British and Latin American literature respectively.

Gibbs, a 1998 Evangel alumnus, worked as a journalist and editor after graduating college. In 2004, he began teaching English full time at Central Bible College.

“Students seem to like Dr. Gibbs as his courses fill quickly,” said Dr. Nathan Nelson, chair of the humanities department. “Dr. Gibbs obviously has phenomenal stamina. For several semesters while he was finishing his dissertation, he taught full-time at CBC and half-to-three-quarter time at Evangel.”

Gibbs joined the Evangel faculty full time this fall.
