SAGU literacy program celebrates tenth anniversary

SAGU/Literacy Lab teamThe SAGU/Shackelford Literacy Lab will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year. Senior-level elementary education majors from Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) provide literacy support and instruction for students grades K-2 at Shackelford Elementary School of the Waxahachie Independent School District (WISD).

SAGU Assistant Professor Paula Manley says, "The collaboration between Shackelford and SAGU has been invaluable to the SAGU elementary education program. The program gives elementary education majors an opportunity to plan and implement instruction in a supervised setting while providing literacy enrichment activities in students small groups.

"Many SAGU alumni tell me how valuable their experience was and that it gave them the confidence they needed to move into student teaching and later into their own classrooms."

SAGU students, supervised by SAGU teacher education faculty, meet with each student or group of students twice a week for thirty minutes. Students work alongside instructional coach/specialist Tricia Peyrot.

The SAGU/Shack Literacy Lab program began in Fall 2002. Throughout ten years, approximately 180 SAGU students have participated in the program, serving more than 500 elementary students.
