Southeastern University Vice President for Student Development, Chris Owen, announced today that Drew Watson has been selected as the school’s director of athletics.
Watson, who has been serving as Southeastern’s interim director of athletics since August, has led the athletic department through several key transitions during his eight months on the job.
Since taking over as interim director of athletics, Watson has overseen the creation of two new athletic programs--football and women’s golf. He was instrumental in the hiring of Southeastern’s first football coach, Keith Barefield, as well as the arrangement to make The Club at Eaglebrooke the home course for both the men’s and women’s golf teams. Watson also negotiated a contract to make Nike the official supplier of Southeastern Fire athletics.
“I am so excited about the future of Fire athletics, and I am honored to have been chosen to lead the department during this important time in our development,” said Watson. “I look forward to working with the coaching staff and leadership team here to make the experience of our student-athletes truly ‘next-level’, and I’m excited to continue our involvement in the Lakeland community.”
Not only has Watson been a part of creating new programs for the future of Fire athletics but he has been instrumental in the development and mentorship of the first year programs of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s tennis, and softball which all began play for the first time during the 2012-2013 school year.
Watson is currently overseeing the development of an on-campus softball facility which is under construction and will also be instrumental in the development of new weightlifting, football, and soccer facilities in the coming years.
“We are excited to have Drew Watson as our director of athletics,” stated Owen. “Over the last year, in his interim role, he has shown time and again his ability to lead at the highest level. His passion for student-athletes and commitment to developing programs made him the obvious choice.”
Watson has previous experience as an athletic director after serving in that role at Cairn University (formally Philadelphia Biblical University) from 2006-2011.
