Evangel University has created The Bill & Gloria Gaither Endowed Music Scholarship in honor of their lifetime contributions to gospel music.
The award was presented on the occasion of the Gaither’s historic visit to Evangel University on Tursday, Feb. 14, when they were a part of a two-day lecture series on gospel music and worship heritage.
Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft spoke the Tuesday prior.
The scholarship has been made possible through generous, anonymous contributions by friends of the Gaithers who are also connected to Evangel.
Bill & Gloria have written more than 700 songs during their lifetime. They have earned eight Grammy Awards and more than two dozen Dove Awards, and they have been named “Songwriters of the Year” eight times by the Gospel Music Association.
In thanking the school, Bill said, “The greatest gift we can receive is one that helps students, like this one will.”
While speaking to students regarding careers in the music industry, Bill encouraged them to “get a well-rounded education in a Christian institution like Evangel University, and prepare for day jobs! Gloria and I worked for 10 years as teachers before we were fortunate enough to go full time in music.”
The $1,000 scholarship will be given to an Evangel student who is majoring in music. Evangel has six different degree programs in music. Many EU students desire to compose, and that will be considered in the selection process.
“Future contributions to this endowment account could either increase the amount of the award and/or increase the number of students receiving the scholarship,” said Jim Williams, vice president for Institutional Advancement for Evangel.
