Evangel University psychology student publishes in national journal

Evangel University senior Kayla Jordan published a review of Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker’s bestseller, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined.

Her review was published in the current volume (31) of The Journal of Christianity and Psychology, which is available in Evangel University’s Klaude Kendrick Library and via online databases.

The book’s premise of a decline in violence seems odd against the backdrop of recurrent news about shootings in the U.S. and violent conflicts elsewhere. However, Pinker draws on a wide range of research to document a downward trend on a worldwide basis.

“It is rare for undergraduates to publish anything before graduation, so this review is a great start on her path to becoming a professor of psychology. I am hopeful more publications will follow,” said Dr. Geoffrey Sutton, professor of psychology. Sutton teaches research in Evangel’s psychology program.

Kayla Jordan, a double major in psychology and history, is from Ripley, Tenn. She graduates in May 2013 and plans to study social psychology in graduate school next year.
