Mary Wickman, PhD, RN, Director of the Nursing Program and Professor at Vanguard University, has been elected to be the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) Board of Directors South representative in 2013. ACNL is a statewide nursing organization that seeks to position nurse leaders to influence the future of health care by developing nurse leaders, advancing professional practice, influencing health policy, and promoting quality health care and patient safety.
“In light of challenging economic times and healthcare reform, it is essential that nursing have a voice at the state, national, and local level to ensure that healthcare changes are patient-centered, timely, and safe” says Dr. Wickman. “ACNL is the organization that has the statewide representation and resources necessary to be the nursing voice in California.”
Mary Wickman, a U.S. Navy veteran, has served in key nursing positions in southern California. She has nearly four decades of leadership in the field of nursing. Wickman earned her BSN from Mount St. Mary’s College and joined the U.S. Navy early in her career. She served on active duty for three years and in the reserves for 18 years. In 1991 she was recalled in support of Desert Storm. Wickman comes most recently from the large nursing program at CSU Fullerton where she was hired to start a program to train nurses to earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Wickman took the Director position at Vanguard in 2011 to establish the University’s new master’s degree in nursing program with an emphasis on education and leadership.
She is currently an active member of the California Action Coalition Workgroup #6, the California Association of Colleges of Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. She is a presenter at local and national nursing conferences and has been published in a variety of peer reviewed nursing journals. Wickman is the contracted research facilitator at St. Jude Medical Center and is on site at the Medical Center one day a week to promote interdisciplinary research and evidence-based practice. She is actively involved in the PEACE plan at Saddleback Church and states that she has been privileged to serve on trips to Rwanda and Mexico City in conjunction with mission teams.
