Evangel University to honor Dr. Glenn H. Bernet Jr. for 50 years of service

The faculty, staff and friends of Evangel will gather this Friday evening, Jan. 18, to honor Dr. Glenn H. Bernet Jr., vice president for academic affairs, for his 50 years of dedicated service to the university.

The event includes a dinner that begins at 6 p.m. and will take place at the Tower Club in Springfield. The event is sold out.

Presenters will include President Robert H. Spence, members of the faculty and Bernet’s son, Rob Bernet, among others.

“Dr. Bernet has been an inspiration to me throughout my time at Evangel,” Spence said. “His job description speaks of his total leadership role for Evangel’s academic programs. The recruitment and securing of qualified faculty is a part of his assignment, but he also devotes a great deal of attention to the content and quality of our entire academic program.

“In his role as dean of the university, he is recognized not only on our campus, but among his peers in other institutions as a very effective educational administrator. His high standards and dedication to detail have distinguished him in his vice presidential role.”

A history of service

Bernet began his service to Evangel in 1963 when he began teaching mathematics in the science and technology department. He attained full professor status in 1981 and assumed the role of vice president for academic affairs in 1985.

During his time at Evangel, Bernet has seen the enrollment increase nearly four-fold. During his leadership, the college has earned university status and added both master’s and adult degree-completion programs.

Bernet is a highly respected member of the Mathematical Association of America. He has been a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, the National Honor Society in Mathematics, since he was a student and has continued involvement with the society, serving as the co-chairperson of the national convention in 1981.

Additionally, he has maintained consistent involvement with the National Conference of Academic Deans, serving as chairman in 1994. Bernet also is a member of the American Association for Higher Education.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Bernet stays active in church and community activities. He has served as president of the Southeast Lions Club, vice chairman of the deacon board at Central Assembly of God, delegate to the Community Planning Council of Greene County and a member of the Springfield Rotary.

Bernet is married to his childhood sweetheart, Lois (Evans) Bernet. They have three grown children, all of whom attended Evangel: Rob Bernet (’86), Julie Leoni and Susan Tolbert (’93). Susan’s husband Todd (’94) also is an Evangel graduate.
