Hispanic Scholarships Planned For AG Schools

The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference will award five scholarships to Hispanic students attending an Assemblies of God college or university. The students must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average and be actively involved in their church youth group.

"Hispanic AG churches are the fastest growing part of our Fellowship, thus we desire more and more of our Hispanic students to be trained for future leadership at our schools," says Assemblies of God General Superintendent George O. Wood. "These scholarships will greatly assist us in this endeavor."

NHCLC President Samuel Rodriguez says there is a growing demand for higher education among Hispanics because of the increased Hispanic U.S. population. The Census Bureau reports that the Latino population grew 43 percent from 2000 to 2010, four times higher than the population overall.

Robert G. Cook Jr., executive vice president of The Alliance for AG Higher Education, says the enrollment rate of Hispanics at AG schools has been increasing. In the 2010-11 school year, Hispanic students comprised 12 percent of total enrollment at 19 affiliated schools, Cook says.
