NAST, founded in 1965, is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges and universities and it establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials.
Becoming accredited by NAST is a rigorous process that includes a self-evaluative description of the institution, an on-site review by a team of evaluators and a judgment by an accreditation decision-making body. Accreditation reviews focus on educational quality, institutional integrity and educational improvements.
NAST accredits only the best of the best, and only 162 schools in the nation have achieved this status so far. With the accreditation, Vanguard University is only the second member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), along with Messiah College (Pennsylvania), to be a part of NAST.
Vanguard joins the elite company of UCLA, Temple University, Baylor University, Penn State University, Florida State University, Howard University, the University of Wisconsin (Madison), Indiana University, Purdue University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Arizona.
"After a two-year process, we can now say that we belong to an elite group of colleges and universities across the nation that have raised the bar in theatre academics and programming. This is certainly a great moment for our theatre department," says Susan Berkompas, the department of theatre arts chair.
It is the Vanguard University department of theatre art's mission to provide each student with a well-rounded, quality education in theatre from a Christian worldview. This is accomplished by focusing on two aspects of education: professionalism and mentoring. By setting high standards across the department, it is ensured students will receive some of the best private training that higher education can offer. In addition to high quality instruction, the theatre arts department provides caring mentors who help shape students' careers and commitments to Jesus Christ.
The purpose of Vanguard University is to pursue knowledge, cultivate character, deepen faith and equip each student for a life of leadership and service. To fulfill that purpose, Vanguard gathers a community of learners resolved to blend the pursuit of academic excellence with growth as authentic Christians.
