Evangel graduate Dr. Melodie Stocks was recently named one of four Merck Outstanding Residents of the Year by the American Osteopathic Foundation.
According to nomination guidelines, the award is presented to someone who "embodies the great spirit of altruism and whose combination of clinical promise, ability to think outside the box, skills in health care and commitment to the osteopathic profession separate them from the crowd."
Stocks, who had been serving as chief resident in the obstetrics and gynecology program at Mercy Health Partners in Muskegon, Mich., was nominated for the award by residency director, Dr. Gus Barkett of Muskegon.
According to the July 24, 2009, online edition of The Muskegon Chronicle, Barkett said, "We've had some very fine residents come through here, but she was just a little above everyone else."
He went on to say that Stocks excelled in the classroom, "always scoring the highest on any test of anyone who has come through here in the last 20 years."
Recipients will be presented with their $5,000 award on Nov. 1, 2009, at the annual American Osteopathic Foundation's Honors Celebration in New Orleans.
Stocks completed her four-year residency at Muskegon Hospital, part of Mercy Health Partners, at the end of July. She and her family have since moved to Moberly, Mo., where she is working in a full-time practice at Moberly Regional Medical Center.
Stocks and her husband, Matthew, have two children: Josiah, 4, and Ashlynn, 2.
Matthew and Melodie are both Evangel graduates.
Melodie (Nelson) graduated summa cum laude in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in biology and missions. She received both the Outstanding Biology Graduate Award and the Outstanding Missions Studies Graduate Award.
Matthew graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies and psychology in 1997 and a Master of Science in clinical psychology in 2001.
Matthew's parents are Evangel alumni: John 1965 and Bette (Groves 1964) Stocks. His uncle, Dr. Mark Stocks, is a 1974 Evangel graduate and former faculty member; his aunt, Beccy (Bopp 1988) Stocks, is a member of the library staff at Evangel.
