The Rev. John F. Plake has been named as the new campus pastor and director of the Spiritual Life Department at Evangel University.
In this position, he will coordinate all chapel services, give leadership to the CROSSwalk student ministries discipleship program, oversee spiritual development programs on campus, and collaborate with the training and sending of service teams, locally and abroad.
Since fall 2007, Plake has served as missionary-in-residence at Evangel, teaching theology courses and helping coordinate service trip opportunities. His background includes 10 years of pastoral experience and nearly 10 years involvement with missions, through the development and implementation of training programs for short-term service teams and missionaries.
"Because of the effectiveness of his work at Evangel, John had already been invited to extend his service for a third year - something almost unprecedented for a missionary-in-residence in Assemblies of God colleges," says Dr. David Bundrick, vice president for student development.
After carefully and prayerfully reviewing 45 applications, the University search committee recommended that an invitation be extended to Plake.
"Evangel students are remarkably passionate for God and desire to make a difference in the world for Him," says Plake. "I find them eager to learn and serve in significant ways. They have great creativity, but they long for guidance. I look forward to helping them discover how their dreams connect to God's purposes in their lives."
"John has a clear vision for strengthening mentoring on our campus, and will be employing technology to enhance discipleship, chapel programs, and assessment," Bundrick said. "He is an Assemblies of God World Missions specialist in preparing short-term missions teams - something that certainly will be an asset in his role as director of spiritual life."
Plake graduated summa cum laude with a master of arts from Wheaton College, where he was named the outstanding graduate in intercultural studies. He also holds a bachelor's degree in pastoral studies from North Central University.
The Rev. Plake and his wife, Mary Tabitha (Nissley), reside in Nixa, Mo., with their two children. Mrs. Plake is a 1990 graduate of Evangel.
